Symposium Overview

Natural forests in many parts of Asia are being depleted due to the conversion of forests for other land uses including agriculture, unsustainable timber extraction and natural disasters among others. Acknowledging the adverse effects of deforestation, many countries have improved forest management, encouraged community participation in restoration and at the same time strengthen capacity in various aspects of forest restoration, rehabilitation and conservation. There are however many challenges in repairing ecological damages through reclamation, rehabilitation and restoration.

This symposium is jointly organized by Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) and Asia Pacific Association of Forestry Research Institutions (APAFRI) with the financial support from Korea Forest Research Institute (KFRI). The Symposium aims to promote the sharing of knowledge and experiences of past, present and future challenges in ecological restoration in Asia. The Symposium will also provide the opportunity to consolidate contemporary scientific framework and improve understanding in restoration ecology. Academicians, researchers, post-graduate students and all who are involved in similar works are expected to benefit from this Symposium which will be held from 3-5 July 2012 in Kuala Lumpur. A copy of the Symposium Brochure is available through the following link:
